Sri Dalada Maligawa also known as the Temple of the Tooth Relic is one of the most important historic and religious sites in Kandy. The temple houses the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha which is not only visited by Sri Lankans but various nationalities from all over the globe. The Royal Palace of the kings of the Kandyan era is also situated right next to the Temple of the Tooth Relic. The temple has a golden roof and the sacred tooth relic is kept inside a golden casket in the shape of a Buddhist temple.

Esala Maha Perahera is one of the most important events taking place in Kandy. It takes place during the months of July or August every year. It is a festival synonymous with the Esala Poya Day in the Buddhist calendar. The festival is celebrated to pay homage to the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The procession consists of “The Kumbal Perahera”, “The Randoli Perahera” on the Esala Poya Day and “The Day Perahera”. Various Kandyan dancers adorned in lavish clothing, whip dancers, local fire dancers and elephants dressed in traditional garments take part in this cultural event.

The Temple of Gadaladeniya is an iconic Buddhist Temple situated in the Pilimathalawa area in Kandy. It is renowned as one of the largest rock temples in Sri Lanka. The temple is also famous in terms of arts and history due to its beautiful wall murals. The temple has a South Indian and Hindu touch to it because it was built by a South Indian Architect. This rock temple was built in 1344 by King Buvanekabahu IV. There are two more popular Buddhist temples close to this location namely Lankathilake Temple and Embekka Devalaya, famous for its wood carvings.

Magul Maduwa is the Royal Audience Hall of the king. Located adjacent to the temple of the Tooth Relic and part of the Royal Palace Complex, it is where the king met his ministers to carry out the daily administrative tasks of the kingdom. The Magul Maduwa is a finely carved wooden building built by the last king of Sri Lanka, King Sri Vikrama Rajasinghe. The historic Kandyan Convention between the British and the Kandyan Chieftans was signed here in 1815 which ended the Kandyan era. Hence this is a very important building in Kandy.

The Bogambara Prison was the second largest prison in Sri Lanka, after the Welikada Prison in Colombo. It was relocated to Pallekele in 2014 and currently serves as a historic monument open for public viewing. Built by the British Ceylon Government in the year 1876, the Bogambara Prison complex has gallows and was one of the two prisons in Sri Lanka where the death penalty was implemented. It is also important as it is one of the oldest existing buildings in Kandy. This 13 acres prison has once housed famous prisoners of the British era including various former members of parliament and anti-war movement leaders in World War II.

The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya is one of the five major botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. It is situated in Perdaniya, very close to the Kandy city. The Royal Botanical Garden is 147 acres in size and includes more than 4000 species of plants such as orchids, medicinal plants, spices and palm trees.

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is an international cricket stadium located in Pallekele in Kandy. Established in 2009, it was named as Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium in 2010 in order to honor the legendary Sri Lankan Spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan. The stadium can accommodate 35,000 spectators. The stadium is 80 meters long and 75 meters wide and has two ends namely Hunnasgiriya End and Rikillagaskanda End.
